Dishwasher noise levels explained

Use declared dBA ratings to narrow your shortlist, then consider where the dishwasher sits and when you run it.

Compare the rating on the exact model

Our main table records manufacturer-declared ratings. For example, Bosch lists 44 dBA for SHP65DM5N, while SHP78CM5N is listed at 42 dBA. Those are useful specification differences, not measurements made in Mary’s kitchen.

A series can include multiple sound ratings. Be particularly careful with drawer machines: a published figure can describe a particular drawer and cycle rather than both drawers operating together. Read the conditions alongside the number.

The room changes the experience

An open kitchen beside a sofa makes operating sound more noticeable than a separate kitchen. Reflective surfaces, an improperly secured appliance and dishes touching each other can also affect what you hear. The product rating does not predict every installation’s sound.

Think about the whole cycle. Filling, draining and changes in the wash can be noticeable even when the general wash sound is restrained. A machine does not need to be completely inaudible to be comfortable in a particular room.

What is worth paying for?

For an open-plan room, start by comparing models in our quieter shortlist and decide whether their racks and drying also suit you. If the dishwasher runs while the kitchen is empty, a slightly higher declared rating may be a reasonable trade for a better installed price.

Do not sacrifice usable capacity or a sound installation solely to chase the lowest number. The quietest quoted model is not automatically the best machine for your dishes or service area.

When noise is a maintenance signal

A new rattle can be a loading problem; check that items do not obstruct the spray arms using the manual’s safe procedure. Grinding, leaks or other unusual operation need investigation. Avoid removing electrical covers or running repeated cycles to diagnose a possible fault.
