What the label does and does not tell you
Manufacturers identify particular models as ADA compliant or ADA compatible. Confirm that claim for the exact US model and its installed configuration. Do not extend a brand’s claim to every model or assume that an appliance label approves the surrounding kitchen.
The US Access Board’s kitchen provisions address controls, clear floor space and the relationship between the open dishwasher door and the clear space at the dishwasher and sink. A layout can fail those needs even when the appliance itself is an appropriate choice.
Make the decision personal
Try reaching the controls, pulling the racks and lifting dishes from the back. Consider grip strength, visual contrast, door resistance and the position of a wheelchair or mobility aid. These practical checks can distinguish two machines with similar dimensions.
A drawer arrangement may suit some users because it changes the loading height. Fisher & Paykel lists the DD24DAX9 N as ADA compliant, but its two-drawer layout should still be tried against the user’s range of movement. The lower drawer and upper drawer do not present identical access.
Before an installation is approved
- Give the designer the exact installation sheet and the user’s access requirements.
- Measure the finished floor-to-counter opening, including any future flooring.
- Check door swing, adjacent cabinets and access to the sink with the machine open.
- For a regulated project, have the responsible professional confirm the applicable requirements and complete layout.
- Choose controls and rack movement that the intended user can operate comfortably.
